Description

Large Cape Rush is a bold, architectural evergreen plant prized for its upright reed-like stems and dramatic form. Native to South Africa, this striking ornamental adds height, texture, and movement to modern, coastal, and Mediterranean-style landscapes. Its deep green stems form dense clumps that work beautifully as accents, mass plantings, or natural screens. Extremely drought-tolerant once established and tolerant of coastal conditions, Large Cape Rush provides year-round structure and low-maintenance beauty in warm climates.

Choose a full sun to partial shade location with well-draining soil. Dig a hole twice as wide as the root ball and plant at the same depth it was growing in its container. Backfill gently, firm the soil, and water thoroughly. Space plants to allow for mature width and airflow. Keep soil evenly moist during the establishment period.

Large Cape Rush thrives in full sun and adapts to a variety of soil types, including sandy and coastal soils. Water regularly during establishment, then reduce watering once established, as it is drought-tolerant. Remove old or damaged stems at the base to maintain a clean appearance. Fertilization is rarely needed. This plant is heat-tolerant, wind-resistant, and very low-maintenance once established.
